What can you do with a "can-do" attitude?

This is the mentality to which I owe my life's successes so far

In partnership with

Happy Sunday and thank you for opening this week’s #TheLifeofJLOWE newsletter!

This week, I’ve been extremely busy (as always), and honestly, questioning how I even do the sheer number of things that I do in a given week. As a life update as to what’s taking up most of my time, I’m now employed full-time again, and I’ve been hosting Sweat & Salty Run Club every Saturday morning at 5am. In addition to that, this week I also had the privilege of judging Mr. & Ms. Campionite 2025 and I also somehow found time to hang out with friends at some point too.

As I sit here and write to you now, however, I can’t help but feel just a tiny bit burnt out, and I’m certainly thinking about ways to relax and re-discover balance in my life as I tackle a multiplicity of projects in the coming months. This week marked 1 full month since my big move back to Jamaica, and I can already feel a change in my general mood and motivation towards life, which continues to re-affirm my decision to move back home as the right one for me at this point in my life.

So how do I do it all?

A question I get from a lot of people is “how do you do so many things?”. For those readers who don’t know me well, in addition to writing #TheLifeofJLOWE newsletter, I’m also a professional musician, (lowkey) a TikToker which - don’t let anybody fool you - is a lot of work, the founder of a run club for young people and a business development manager at work.

I list these things not to brag - because honestly I love each aspect of my life equally - but more so to demonstrate that it is possible to be multiple things in this life, and it is possible to pursue excellence in all things that you do too.

As I told you last week, my word for the year is “Excellence”, and for me right now, that means showing up in the best way possible for anything that I decide to pursue this year. Above all, it means giving my best in any situation, and over-delivering in every way that I can.

And it all stems from what I like to call a “can-do” attitude.

So what is a “can-do” attitude?

For me, my whole life, the attitude that I’ve tried to adopt is this “can-do” attitude, which essentially means believing that anything can be done. It’s this mentality of optimism and possibility that makes me recognize that anything that I want to achieve, I’m fully able to do so.

I think a lot of people have a “cannot-do” attitude ☹️ that speaks self-doubt and worries into their lives, and that kind of attitude holds real power over you if you don’t challenge it.

Obviously I’m nowhere near perfect, so oftentimes I find myself in situations where I too doubt myself or shy away from opportunities because of fear. That “cannot-do” attitude, however, has 100% of the time resulted in regret and the phrase “I should have done…”.

The beautiful thing, however, is that in the same way that a “cannot-do” attitude holds real power over you, a “can-do” attitude can empower you exponentially as well. Believing in yourself and speaking optimism and confidence into your life allows you to tackle any challenge that life throws at you, because you become conscious and convinced of the fact that you in fact are capable of withstanding storms and coming out stronger.

So what can you do?

A “can-do” attitude is the equivalent of believing in yourself, and believing in your ability to accomplish anything that you put your mind to. It forces you to believe that difficult things are possible, and to believe that it is possible for them to be achieved by YOU.

It’s a can-do attitude that got me into Cornell, a can-do attitude that helped me to run my first marathon last year, and it’s even a can-do attitude that helped me to quit my toxic job last year too. If you believe that you can do better, that you can achieve more, and that you can accomplish more, you will find yourself gradually beginning to realize your true potential in all of your endeavours.

I can do so many different things because I believe that I can.

Conclusion

This isn’t just an article to tell you that you can do whatever you put your mind to. I’m sure you’ve heard that cliche phrase a million times before. It’s true, yes - quite true - however, my intention is to simply remind you that you are capable. Oftentimes we let self doubt or even other people tell us all the reasons why we can’t do something. Oftentimes, we let fear dictate the decisions we make in life too.

I challenge you this week to think about all the reasons why you CAN do something. Forget the fear, forget the worries, forget the risks. Tell me about the rewards. Tell me about the green grass that’s on the other side.

It’s so interesting to me how we can know the huge payoffs waiting on the other side of engaging in something, yet still find a way to talk ourselves out of doing it out of fear. We’re so much more easily swayed by negativity and by doubt and fear than we are by positivity and rewards. It’s so much easier to resist change and resist even tiny risks, because we get comfortable with where we are and worry about the uncertainty of change.

But as I said last week, coupled with “Excellence”, my second word of 2025 is “change”. This year, it’s all about “what can I do” and “how well can I do it”.

So this week, ask yourself those two questions. If there’s something that you’re currently not doing because of self-doubt, re-evaluate it with a “can-do” attitude. You’re capable, and guess what - even if you’re not - you will only become capable by giving it a try. So go do it anyways!

Go do it because you can!

Until next Sunday,
Justin
